Weaving Wicklow's Wool Heritage into a Sustainable Future'

21 August, 7:30pm - 9pm

  • Manor Kilbride Community Centre
  • Kilbride, Co Wicklow
  • W91 PX08
  • Co. Wicklow

This event will present a vibrant and engaging exploration of the Wicklow Sheep and Wool Industry, showcasing its historical, cultural, and environmental impact on the region.

Through both visual displays and live presentations, we will trace the story of sheep farming in Wicklow—how it shaped the landscape, supported rural communities, and contributed to local identity.

Oliver Fallon Bailey, contracted under our Community Heritage Grant from the Heritage Council, has been collecting stories and insights from across the county. Drawing from his earlier work with the Roundwood Folklore, Historical and Archaeological Society, particularly on the Roundwood Sheep Market, Oliver has expanded this research to include broader economic, social, and environmental narratives. Through this work we look forward—exploring how the wool industry might support conservation goals such as peatland restoration in Wicklow’s uplands.

We hope to conclude the event with insights from a wool merchant who will speak about the current state of Irish wool and its potential future. He will be joined by a member of the Irish Grown Wool Council (IGWC) who brings a national perspective, sharing experiences from remote regions including Dingle and West Cork, and discussing what could be done to revitalise Ireland’s wool industry for future generations.
