A Guided Tour of Lonehort Gun Battery

15 August, 1pm - 2:30pm

  • Meet outside the main gate to Lonehort Battery
  • Lonehort Battery, East End, Bere Island,
  • Co. Cork County

Visit the former military stronghold of Bere Island for a guided tour of Lonehort Battery, the largest of seven gun batteries built on Bere Island by the British Admiralty in the early 1900s.

Led by an islander who has a passionate interest in local history, this remarkably preserved fortification offers an immersive look into Ireland's strategic past. As you cross the deep dry moat surrounding the battery, you will explore the subterranean gunpowder stores, and view the imposing six-inch guns that still stand guard over the island’s coastline.

Your tour guide will weave together tales of global engineering feats, the daily lives of the soldiers stationed here, Bere Island's role as one of Ireland's three Treaty Ports and Fort Berehaven's eventual handover to the Irish state in 1938. It is a compelling journey that captures both the breathtaking natural beauty of Bere Island and the strategic role Bere Island has played in European and World history.
