1640s Battles of Ballyhack
During the Confederate Wars, Ballyhack Castle, Passage East Fort and Duncannon Fort became strategically important strongholds in the defence of Waterford. Their commanding positions along the River Suir and Waterford Harbour made them vital to controlling access to the city, and the area subsequently witnessed fierce fighting and conflict.
This illustrated talk by local historian Andrew Doherty will explore the military action centred on Ballyhack Castle and the surrounding harbour area during this turbulent period. It will examine the strategic importance of these fortifications and the events that unfolded around them during the wars.
Please note: Access to Ballyhack Castle is via a steep staircase. Places are free but limited and pre-booking is essential.
