The Ranelagh site revealed human activity during the medieval period and had a burial ground with human remains which on analysis revealed information on lifestyle and diet.
As part of an archaeological mitigation programme a site with burials was excavated at Ranelagh , near Roscommon town. The work was undertaken by Archaeological Consultancy Ltd and Transport Infrastructure Ireland over 54 weeks. Exhumation of over 800 burials was made to facilitate scientific study by specialists in QUB in Osteoarchaeology, DNA for determining genetic composition, familial relatedness, isoptope research for diet and migration, maternal and infant health and funerary practices.
