Two minute histories (the story of the workhouse poor: audio pieces)

Clare Doyle
Irish Workhouse Centre

There were 163 workhouses in operation around Ireland. They were built to provide relief to the destitute poor. Usually, they were located in the largest market town in the area, so it's likely that wherever you are in Ireland, a workhouse was once located nearby. For National Heritage Week this year, the Irish Workhouse Centre presents 'Two Minute Histories', a series of short audio pieces telling the story of the workhouse poor. Each piece focuses on a different theme and reflects research carried out this year on the invisible people who lived and died in the buildings of Portumna Union.
