'The very shepherds could speak Latin': Fr. Gargan's Classical School

Brian Callaghan
Moybologue Historical Society

Fr. John Gargan (1649 - 1730) was famous for his classical school at Moybologue old church and is possibly the earliest known teacher or educator in the locality. This research project will assemble what is known about Fr. Gargan from published sources and folklore collections. It will use these details to present the story of Fr. Gargan the man, his contemporaries, his pupils, as well as the environment and period in history during which Fr. Gargan lived. The project aims to share this story with a modern audience so as to understand and appreciate the heritage of education in this area. The output of the project will be shared publicly as an online presentation via Moybologue Historical Society's social media accounts during National Heritage Week 2020.
