The Remarkable Bishop O'Higgins

Mairead Ni Chonghaile
Longford Heritage Office

St. Mel's Cathedral is an iconic landmark in County Longford, which has been beautifully restored after a devastating fire at Christmas 2009. The cathedral was the brainchild of Bishop William O'Higgins, who was born close to the village of Drumlish, not far from Longford town. The cathedral was inspired by the great churches he saw in Paris and Rome. The local community in Drumlish is working to celebrate the life and achievements of this remarkable man.
