Lubgort: a medieval herb garden

Emma Timoney
Sligo Abbey OPW

Sligo Abbey, Sligo Town’s only standing medieval building, once stood on a larger plot of land than it does today. On these grounds the Dominican Friars maintained gardens, an orchard, and fish weirs along the Garavogue river. To celebrate National Heritage Week 2020, organisers aim to recreate Sligo Abbey’s lubgort, or herb garden, with a potted installation. Those interested can join a virtual guided tour in the planting, tending, and using of a medieval herb garden.
