Lighting Up the Night

Caroline Conway
Birr Vintage Week & Arts Festival

Lighting Up the Night is an illuminated trail of buildings and windows around Birr, supported by the Arts Council of Ireland and Creative Ireland Offaly, as part of Birr Vintage Week & Arts Festival. There are two elements to the trail, Vintage Luminaries and Window Wanderland. Vintage Luminaries, brings a modern twist to the heritage of the built environment, illuminating significant buildings with newly commissioned visually immersive projection mapped imagery and accompanying soundscapes to captivate the viewer and reinterpret the heritage stories of Birr. To accompany the large-scale illuminations, Window Wanderland puts the creation into the hands of the community with individual households, shops and businesses, making window illuminations which turn the streets of the town into an outdoor gallery and dusk to dark walking trail. It is a chance for people to explore their local area on foot, to see new places, or to see familiar places in a new way Anyone can join in and create pride in the community. It is the perfect socially distanced arts event, supported by online workshops, made in people’s homes and shared with the community through the windows. Birr Vintage Week & Arts Festival runs from 14th to 21st August
