Jay birds regenerate an Oak wood

Joe Gowran
Woodlands of Ireland

The bird feeders outside the kitchen window of a cottage deep in the forest attract three pairs of Jays and their fledgling chicks. The Jays have been busy stashing fresh acorns at the bases of felled Sitka Spruce nearby. They know that when they see the leaves of the sprouted acorns emerge, it is time for a feed. The most developed sprouts are left behind as they're too far gone to eat, so they continue to grow into Oak trees which will fed their descendants in the future. A short video sets the scene.
