Engaging with the Ancestors: Views towards Sligo's neolithic landscapes

Mark Roddy
Sligo Neolithic Landscapes

'Engaging with the Ancestors: Views towards Sligo's neolithic landscapes' consists of two physical walking tours will occur simultaneously at neolithic sites in Sligo over and prior to Heritage week 2020; the first on the Ballygawley mountain range, and the second on Knocknarea. In line with social distancing restrictions from Covid-19, these events will be subject to a cap on the number of participants on each tour. The neolithic heritage of Sligo is unparalleled anywhere in the world and the tours aim to raise public awareness of our unique cultural ancestry and to the alarming damage being caused to the integrity of our neolithic landscape as a result of greatly increased footfall - in particular at Queen Maedbh’s Cairn and other neolithic passage tombs throughout Sligo. Crucially, this project will serve as a pilot public awareness campaign for the protection of the wider Sligo neolithic landscape. Participants will act as ambassadors and through online social media engagement will help to amplify the project's message; that of conservation, respect, and communal responsibility. Participants on each tour will be encouraged to document their tour, either through word, video or picture and share their experience through social media - broadcasting our core vision and reaching out to a much larger audience.
