Cork's LGBT+ built heritage

Patricia Looney
Cork City Libraries

In the year that Cork City became an official member of the Rainbow Cities Network, this project aims to encourage a deeper community understanding of the LGBT+ histories associated with Cork city’s built heritage. This interactive online experience allows the public to explore the spaces used by LGBT+ people from the 70s to the present, view the nature of these places and how their usage changed over time. Utilising the invaluable Cork LGBT Archive compiled by Orla Egan, this project creates an interactive, chronological map displaying changing patterns of LGBT+ communities in Cork. Contemporary newspaper articles and headlines pertaining to each decade are displayed in an attempt to reflect general attitudes towards LGBT+ people in those times. Finally, modern photographs of the buildings ground the viewer in ‘the here and now’, connecting the past and present LGBT+ experience with known and recognisable buildings around Cork city.
