From Photograph to Facade- Restoring Carnew's Historic Shopfront

This Heritage Week, a window display on Carnew’s Main Street invites visitors to explore the story of a historic shopfront that has shaped the town’s streetscape for generations. Through a series of information boards, the display traces how the shopfront changed over time and how its recent reinstatement, supported by the Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS), responds to the wider issue of heritage at risk in rural Irish towns.

Traditional shopfronts once defined the character of villages like Carnew, expressing local craftsmanship, materials, and identity. Over the decades, many were altered or modernised, resulting in the quiet erosion of historic streetscapes. This exhibition showcases the role the shop has played in the community, along with the restoration work involved in recreating a traditional shopfront, guided by historic imagery.

The reinstatement project drew on these historic images to recover key features, including the recreation of the original porcelain lettering. These letters were hand cut from PVC board, shaped to match the historic profiles, and hand painted with a marbled finish to echo the earlier ceramic material. The joiner reinstated the traditional shopfront profiles, mouldings, and timber detailing based on the photographic evidence. Though modest in scale, the project demonstrates how small, carefully considered interventions can help safeguard local heritage.

This self guided display encourages passersby to reflect on the value of traditional shopfronts and the role they play in maintaining the identity of towns like Carnew. A Heritage Week talk will take place on Friday 21 August at 5.30pm, featuring a member of the Dowse family, the joiner, and the sign maker. Delivered in collaboration with Wicklow County Council and Carnew Town Team.
