The following event organisers are looking for volunteers to help with their Heritage Week 2016 events.


Title of event: Community Graveyard Survey

Name & address: Glendalough

Location of volunteers: Glendalough

Type of activity: Join the Community Graveyard Survey team of Community Volunteers and UCD Students in recording the gravemarkers at Glendalough.

Title of event: Community Archaeological Excavation 

Name & address: Glendalough

Location of volunteers: Glendalough

Type of activity: Community Archaeological Excavation at Glendalough from the 8th – 20th of August. Join the excavation team, led by UCD School of Archaeology in their exploration of the medieval enclosure of Glendalough. This opportunity is suited to those with an interest in history and archaeology with at least two days to spare. It is free of charge and full training is provided. No experience required. Limited placed, booking essential. 

Other details: This initiative is supported by the Hertiage Office of Wicklow County Council and the Heritage Council as an action of the County Wicklow Heritage Plan.

Title of event: Kids Shipwreck Dig and Vintage Children’s Toys Workshops

Name & address: Abbeyleix Heritage Company, Heritage House, Abbeyleix, Co. Laois.

Location of volunteers: Heritage House

Type of activity: Assisting staff and the children attending events e.g. teaching kids how to do archaeological digging and/or how to play with or build specific toys.

Other details: No experience required.  Volunteers would be required for 2 hours for each event.

Title of event: Cork Heritage Open Day

Name & address: Cork Heritage Open Day, Cork City Council.

Type of activity: A few hours required on Saturday 20th August. Join the team of Volunteers for Cork Heritage Open Day’s 12th year.

Other details: Applicants are required to be over 18 with a strong command of the English language. No previous experience required.

Title of event: Archaeofest

Name & address: Institute of Archaeologist of Ireland, 63 Merrion Square, Dublin.

Location of volunteers: Merrion Square Park, Dublin 2.

Type of activity: Undertaking survey of visitors, encouraging people to come into the park to enjoy the event, counting heads, general monitoring.

Title of event: Battle of Kells Medieval Fayre (Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 August 2016)

Name & address: Festival Office, Church Street, Kells, County Meath (Volunteer Programme is managed by Volunteer Ireland)

Location of volunteers: Kells Town & Medieval Wall, County Meath

Type of activity: Step back in time with Event Volunteers to Kells’ rich medieval past with a host of events including jousting, re-enactments, street theatre, falconry, story telling, living history demonstrations, archery and children’s entertainment. We’re recruiting Event Volunteers for a variety of roles over the two days of this festival. All roles involve volunteers activities as ambassadors of the Kells and the festival itself. Training will be provided during the week before the event.
