'Stockings for the Queen' - Balbriggan's Textile Heritage A free talk by Dr David Sorensen on the unique industrial heritage that made Balbriggan famous.

Textile mills, factories, and a thriving cottage industry were central to the life of Balbriggan for several centuries and many locals and their ancestors worked in them. One of the factories, Smyth & Co., established in 1780 focused its production on high-quality hosiery. The merit of Balbriggan's stockings and hose became renowned worldwide with customers from the ranks of European royalty such as the Empress of Austria, the Tsarina of Russia and none other than Queen Victoria herself.
