Free Photography Workshops

Are you an avid photographer or just want to learn something new? 

Here are some great free photography events and workshops happening this National Heritage Week. 

Archives in the Attic' Exhibition - Gallery of Photography, Temple Bar - Dublin
Saturday 19- Sunday 27 August , 11am - 6pm

The exhibition features photographs from the current phase of research – Reframing the Border – recording diverse experiences of families from the border counties. Daily talk: 1pm (20min) Our Photo Album of Ireland archive project records the rich social history held in family archives. This online archive project explores the role photography plays in documenting our lives and recording our memories – preserving them for future generations. 

Landscapes of War - Powerscourt Townhouse, 59 South William Street, Dublin 
Saturday 19 August - Sunday 27 August , 9am - 6pm

Stephen Tierney’s, Landscapes of War, is war photography with a difference. Colour and B&W photographs explore the collecting of war memorabilia, specifically cannonballs spanning over two centuries. Creating Landscapes of War, photographer and architect Stephen Tierney used old WWll aerial reconnaissance lenses and contemporary digital methods to document part of the Casey family’s multi-generational tradition of collecting militaria. 

One Dodder Day – The Hive, Herbert Park, Dublin

Sunday 20 August, All DaySunday 27 August, 11am - 5pm

On Sunday 20th August head to the Dodder River and photograph nature along the river. Send your images to by 1pm on Monday, August 21st. In celebration of Water Day on Sunday 27th they will print the best ones for an exhibition in the Hive which will also feature poetry and talks.

Capture Derry Walls – The Sandwich Co, Bishop Street, Derry

Saturday 19 August, 11am - 12:30pm

Join a guided photography tour and historical walk of the Derry Walls.  Improve your camera phone skills and learn the best ways to capture the beautiful Derry Walls on camera. Booking is required.

Making Pinhole Cameras – Castletown House, Kildare

Saturday 19 August, 11:30am - 1pm

A creative way to make your own camera.  Join artist Emma O`Toole to find out how a pinhole camera was used and make a simple pinhole camera of your own. Suitable for children. Booking is required.

Forced Perspective Tutorial – Cairn T Loughcrew, Meath

Saturday 19 August, 2pm - 4pm

Photographer Colm Kerr will talk you on a journey to learn the techniques of forced perspective. Have fun learning a new technique creating optical illusions. Any photos taken by Colm will be sent on to you digitally.

How to Photograph a Monument – OPW Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre, Meath

Sunday 20 August, 11am - 1pm

Bring along your camera and learn about some of the secrets of photographing a monument by Con Brogan who worked for many years as Photographer for the National Monuments Service.

Cyanotype Workshop - The Courthouse Gallery & Studios, Ennistymon, Clare

Tuesday 22 August, 2:30pm - 5pm

Discover the magic of photography with this fun and exciting workshop suitable for all ages.  Drop in and make and take away your very own photographically sensitive paper and produce your own unique 'photograms', a cameraless technique that captures the shadows an object casts on the paper.

Shot in the Dark – St. Patricks Church Carpark, Monaghan

Wednesday 23 August, 8pm - 9:30pm

An opportunity for all you budding photographic enthusiasts to capture a historical building at night. Refreshments will be served afterwards. Booking is required.

After Hours Photography Evening -  St. Patrick’s Cathedral Dublin

21st of August 6.30pm-9.30pm

Here is an opportunity for you photographers out there. St. Patrick’s Cathedral is hosting an after-hours photography evening. Hashtag your perfect image and it will get posted onto a giant screen on the night for everyone to see. Free admission but Booking is required.

Nature Through the Lens – Merlin Park Woods, Galway

Sunday 27 August, 12pm - 2pm

Fancy yourself a bit of a wildlife or nature photographer or want to learn what it takes? Why not join this photography walk led by Noel Barbour of Friends of Merlin Woods. Bring your cameras along to explore the wildlife, and gain tips and techniques for taking wildlife photography.
