ONLY THREE WEEKS LEFT TO REGISTER YOUR HERTIAGE WEEK 2009 EVENT - MAY 31ST DEADLINE

Wednesday 6th May 09: As the countdown begins to Heritage Week 2009 (22nd - 30th August), the Heritage Council has issued a reminder for organisers to register their event online or by post before May 31st in order to be included in the Heritage Week 2009 Event Guide.

"The Heritage Week 2009 Event Guide will list details of events taking place in each county. The guide is distributed both nationally and internationally in tourist offices, heritage centres and various hotels and hostels. Your event will automatically be included in the guide if you register online or by post by  May 31st.  The guide is a fantastic way for organisers to raise awareness about their event", reminded Rebecca Reynolds, Heritage Week Coordinator at the Heritage Council.

Heritage Week 2009 is open to everyone; you can get involved by either organising your own event or volunteering with local groups in your area.  The Heritage Council has put together some handy tips to get you started;

  • Set up a meeting with members of your community to discuss ideas.
  • No online access to old events
  • Look at the facilities around you that you could use - historical sites, parks and gardens, woodlands, schools, libraries, inland waterways and heritage centres.
  • Involve local people who are available to you - historians, wildlife experts, local authorities, schools, churches, community groups, youth clubs, drama groups, musicians and artists.
  • Pick a date and time during Heritage Week 09 and register your event online or by post before May 31st.
  • If you can send images that will promote your event with your registration.
  • The Heritage Council will publicise events nationally and send you posters and programmes with which to promote your event locally.
  • Finally, with only three months to go, get planning.

"Heritage Week is a fantastic opportunity for you to showcase the natural and cultural heritage in your area, as well as attracting visitors and raising revenue for your town or village. For further information, log on to www.heritageweek.ie, email events@heritagecouncil.ie or CallSave 1850 200 878", added Reynolds.

Heritage Week is co-ordinated by The Heritage Council and funded by the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government, and is part of European Heritage Days, which is celebrated in over 40 countries across Europe.
